October 4, 2007 - NAV CANADA is installing a certified Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME)
NAV CANADA wishes to inform its customers of air navigation changes affecting the Calgary Springbank Airport (CYBW). These changes primarily involve installation of new instrument approach capability as well as the relocation of existing non-certified pilot-training navigation aids.
As part of the development of Calgary Springbank as an IFR destination airport and in support of existing RNAV instrument procedures, NAV CANADA is installing a certified Instrument Landing System (ILS) and Distance Measuring Equipment (DME) for runway 34. This improvement will replace the existing non-certified ILS that has been used primarily for pilot training purposes and provide a precision approach capability for customers of the Calgary Springbank airport. The installation is currently in progress and it is expected that the ILS will be available for flight operations by the December 20, 2007.
In addition, at the request of the Calgary Airport Authority, the training VOR will be relocated to a new site on the airfield. This relocation is expected to be completed in November and will result in the unavailability of the VOR for pilot training purposes from 5-16 November. The training DME that is currently located with the training VOR will be removed from service as it is no longer supportable by NAV CANADA. Flight schools will be able to use the new certified DME being installed with the ILS for VOR/DME training purposes.
Unofficially, SABPA has been informed that an RVR system is also on the horizon for the our airport.
NAV CANADA regrets any inconvenience that these changes create in the short term; however, these changes will significantly improve overall service to our customers at the Calgary Springbank Airport.
